General Information:

The Railway is able to provide free car and coach parking at Furnace Sidings Station (by Garn Lakes). Please note that there is no available parking at Whistle Inn or Blaenavon High Level Stations

If you are travelling as a large group (greater than 10 in number), please email us in advance so we can discuss your requirements.

Whilst we welcome all of our less-abled visitors, we must advise that facilities at our stations for those with wheelchairs is currently limited. The work which is under way at Furnace Sidings in particular, will make the railway far more wheelchair user friendly quite soon.

Facilities at Our Stations:

Currently, the main facilities we have are at our station at Furnace Sidings where we have our tea room (serving a range of cold snacks and hot and cold refreshments), toilets and shop. We are presently working to improve the situation at both Furnace Sidings and Blaenavon High Level where new buildings are in the process of being constructed

For visitors arriving by car:

Steam train Road Sign The railway is situated just off the B4248 between Blaenavon and Brynmawr, and is well signposted as you approach Blaenavon, using the brown steam train sybol as shown to the left.

For visitors coming from the east, use Junction 25a or if you are coming from the west, use Junction 26 and head for Cwmbran and then pick up the signs for Pontypool or Big Pit.

Once in Blaenavon, follow signs for Brynmawr as far as Garn yr Erw, where the Railway is down on the left (Look for the Railway's Sign).

For visitors arriving at the Railway by public transport, whilst the railway is served by Abergavenny, Pontypool and New Inn, Cwmbran and Newport Railway Stations, Newport and Cwmbran provide the easiest to access for onward bus services.

Stagecoach operate two useful services from Newport to Blaenavon, please use the links for timetables:

X24 Newport - Blaenavon via Cwmbran. Visitors will need to use the station at Blaenavon High Level or walk through to Furncae Sidings (20+ minute walk),
30 Newport - Brynmawr - certain services operate to Big Pit, this services passes through Garn yr Erw, which is at the entrance to Furnace Sidings.

Safety Information

In the interests of making everyones visit as enjoyable as possible, we ask our visitors to follow the following safety tips:

  • Please refrain from opening the train doors until the train has stopped at a platform.
  • Please take extra care when alighting at Whistle Inn Station as the rear carriage may not be on the platform.
  • Please do not lean out of the carriage windows.
  • Please watch out for others, especially children when closing any doors.
  • Please take care around any of the construction works that are currently taking place
  • Please do not walk on or near the track.
  • When crossing the line at the Level Crossing, please co-operate with any directions given by Railway Staff.
  • If you undertake a visit to our yard, please follow all the safety tips mentioned on the card.
