Lighting from behind accentuates the appearance of
increasingly lush scrub growth. Loco 37
216 berths in the yard road, as 73 128 leads the 3-Cep on the complex
manoeuvre from the Down Exchange Sidings.
At the rear, 37 421 produces a ‘top’n’tail’ formation. The train is about to cross from the up
loop to the main in order to access Furnace Sidings Platform 1. |
It’s early in the day, but passengers are beginning
to gather in some number. Loco 37 421
will propel the 3-Cep. Class 37s are
not fitted to permit ‘through control’ of the EMU 3-Cep – only classes 33 and
37 can do this. (‘Through control’
allows the propelling locomotive to be controlled from the EMU front
cab). At this stage the resident 73
128 had already sprung control problems, so this interesting form of train control was unavailable for
public display. |
Locos 73 128 and 37 216 pose on platforms 2 and 1
respectively. On each platform, the
towers for the footbridge stand waiting for the main deck to be
installed. This is planned for September
2009, so that photographers will have a new viewpoint from which to record
next year’s gala – and this view will be changed forever. |

All four of the day’s players on display! On platform 2, Class 31, D5627 stands
behind Class 73, No.73128, whilst on Platform 1 Class 37 No.37126 stands
behind classmate No.37421. 37 126 has
seen extensive body repairs this year, and is expected to return to an early
green livery by next year. A similar
fate is rumoured for 73 421 |
Serious acceleration as two Class 37s – 37 216 and
37 421 propel just three coaches up the grade and under a glowering sky. Rail passengers have rarely experienced
such exhilarating g-forces! |
Late for the party, but exquisitely dressed, D5627,
and, hand in hand with 37 216 as they drift back down the bank from the
summit at Whistle Inn. |

Loco 37 421 slowly propels 3-Cep EMU 1198 from the
Down Exchange Sidings up into Furnace Sidings, Platform 1, ready for its turn
in the increasingly ad hoc timetable. |
