THE MOVE, by Albert Mutton

The circumstances at Meldon added to the storage agreement running out there meant the early months of 2008 were somewhat fraught.  ‘Do Not Cut’ signs had been put up in 1198’s windows, while asset stripping tea ms were cutting up and carting off everything they could.

1198 had long been promised a home at the Eden Valley Railway, home to 2311 and 2315. However, after we were contacted by John Down of the Pontypool and & Blaenavon Railway, a vote was held and PBR was chosen.  The move took place in May, over the period of a week.  Here is the TBC is seen leaving Dartmoor. The wheels on the low loader trailer are being ‘steered’ by the man walking behind.

Within a few weeks the faded Atlantic Coast Green undercoat insisted upon by Dartmoor was going fast under a hastily applied Rail Blue topcoat. Julian Pope made a start, see his picture above, contrasting the before and after.

Stores remain an issue, there are still several batteries and 9 complete window assemblies at Meldon, plus some stuff still on the unit, however the PBR allowed us the use of a couple of old huts and of a BG for storing a lot of stuff. The picture below was taken in May by Ali Grieve after test runs with the class 73 had proved very popular and successful
